My REVIEW: An entertaining paranormal read for teens!
Rating: 4 stars
Comments: Great characters and a fast pace read. There are some interesting twists and turns in this novel, I commend Burthom on her creative talents! I can't wait to see what she comes up with next. I did have a few issues with the a couple threads of the book concerning the how our protagonist becomes homeless. But, over all this was an entertaining and fun read! An interesting Horror/Thriller/Paranormal Teen Read.

Book review: Rosie Burthom, The Doll (@BurthomRosie ) #Bookreview
The doll had perhaps been the last straw for John, Janie’s father. Whenever he was taken into hospital his daughter was sent into care where she was bullied, beaten, and her things were stolen. Last time they had taken the keepsake given to her by her long deceased mother, a doll. John decided she would be safer with his old friend Nancy, she wasn’t homeless, as such, but was as close as could…

The daughter of a Draftsman and a homemaker, Rosie grew up in various provinces in Canada. She spent most of her childhood in British Columbia before moving to Saskatchewan for a year and eventually putting down roots in Ontario. Rosie's writing journey originated in her early teens. She started out writing children’s stories, then expanded her skills into writing personal poetry and short stories for children. Recently, she has branched out to writing Paranormal Thrillers. R. J. Davies (RJD): Good afternoon Rosie, thanks for joining us. My first question is do you ever Google yourself?
Rosie Burthom (RB): yes I have on occasion just cause I'm curious what comes up.
RJD: Which writers inspire you?
RB: Stephen King, Maureen Jennings, Catherine Astolfo
RJD: Great choices. When did you know you wanted to be a writer?
RB: When I was eleven
RJD: Seems to be a trend, being drawn to this craft at a young age. Do you believe in writer’s block? If so, how do you combat it?
RB: I do believe in writer's block because I've had it. In order to get past it, I take a break from what is causing the block and try writing something for one of the writing prompts I find online. Pinterest is a good place for prompt or I just google writing prompts. The picture prompts are good too.
RJD: Thank you for sharing that. Do you carve out time, such as a structured schedule for your writing? How is your day structured when it comes to writing? Do you write every day?
RB: I wish I could focus enough to write every day. Sometimes there are big gaps of days or weeks in between my writing periods. Then other times I will write all day every day like an obsessed crazy person. (We both laugh) Those are the times when I get a good idea and the story just flows on to the paper like water from a tap.
RJD: What draws you to the genre that you write?
RB: As far back as I can remember I've had terrible nightmares of things that could never be real. I've always had a vivid imagination but nothing compared to my nightmares. It took over 30 years to figure out that perhaps my nightmares were telling me what to write. They do say 'write what you know.' I know nightmares and I've always believed in the paranormal. I've even seen and felt a paranormal presence in my past.
RJD: What do you read?
RB: Lately, I've been reading a lot of paranormal related books for research purposes. But my regular reading usually consists of murder mysteries, cozy mysteries anything that is a 'who done it' type story.
RJD: What does your family think about your writing? Do they read your work?
RB: My family is supportive of my writing. My mother read my book 'The Doll' and she liked it. My sister and brother haven't read anything yet but they are very supportive.
RJD: That is awesome.  What is the craziest thing you’ve done in your life?
RB: The craziest thing I have done in my life would be standing up to the drug dealer that lived upstairs above my first apartment. I lived downtown Brantford in one of the buildings they tore down ten years ago. The guy upstairs was dealing off the roof outside my bedroom window, and he and his friends did drugs in the lobby outside my apartment door. One day I had enough and I confronted him on the small landing of the floor he lived on. I was never so scared in my life.
RJD: Oh wow, that sounds intense. I’m glad it all worked out. How would family and friends describe you?
RB: Family and friends would probably say I'm determined. When I decide I'm going to do something I find a way to do it no matter what the consequences. They would also say I'm kind and selfless. I would bend over backward to help someone and not care if I get the same in return. I've been told I have an amazing imagination and that it comes across in my writing.
RJD: That is beautiful. Thank you so much for joining me today.
RB: Thanks for having me.
RJD: Any time, wishing you much luck in the future. If you haven’t checked out Rosie Burthom‘s The Doll: Lillian Darkwood Mystery available on Amazon.

Interview with Lillian Darkwood a Rosie Burthom Character from “The Doll”
Good morning, we are lucky to be sitting here with Lillian Darkwood.
Lillian Darkwood is from Rosie Burthom’s book The Doll!
R. J. Davies (RJD): Thank you for joining us Lillian, please tell us a little about yourself, what do you do for a living?
Lillian Darkwood (LD): I am a high school history teacher but I also write mysteries for young adults. Perhaps you have read some of my books.
RJD: I was not aware of them. What are they
LD: Murder in the Dark and Killer Among the Willows.
RJD: I will have to look for them. What is your favorite thing about the city you live in?
LD: I live in Tisdale City grew up here and I met my loving belated husband Jack here. My favorite place is the national history museum. I volunteered there one summer in high school and I have loved going there ever since.
RJD: It sounds lovely. Where is your favorite place to eat in Tisdale City?
LD: If you love cheeseburgers like I do you should checkout Monicco’s on Wilmount Street. Their bacon cheeseburger is out of this world.
RJD: Making a note of that now. What is your favorite childhood memory?
LD: Helping my Dad at his general store. I loved helping Dad stock the shelves and serving the customers. It gave me a close connection with my father and I enjoyed learning new things.
RJD: Do you like to travel? If yes where have you been? Where would you like to go?
LD: I loved to travel when my husband Jack was alive. We would tour as many historical buildings as we could pack into our trip. Like me Jack was a huge fan of history. The last place we visited was the Bahamas.
RJD: It’s a beautiful place. How supportive is your family?
LD: My family is very supportive. I meet with my parents weekly for Sunday dinner. My brother Mark who lives in California supports me also but I only see him once or twice a year. He is so busy being a lawyer he forgets to make time for family things. I do talk to him weekly though via skype.
RJD: Do you believe in good and evil?
LD: Of course I do who doesn’t? But there are different levels of evil you know. Some would classify children who pick on each other are evil. Murder is evil. Breaking any of the Ten Commandments is evil. Then we have the evil we can’t see.
RJD: Do you believe in ghost and the paranormal?
LD: Yes definitely. Don’t you? Did you know there is a difference between the two? A good article I found online explains the difference between the two if you’re interested. Here is the link. The Difference Between Ghost and Spirit
RJD: Have you ever had an experience that has made you question your own reality?
LD: I have but if I tell you then I would be giving away parts of the latest story I am staring in. (we both laugh)
RJD: How has your experiences changed the way you look at the world around you?
LD: I couldn’t give away much in the last question but I can tell you this, there are somethings that can happen you in life that you just never get over. Some even broaden your interests to the point where they can twist the whole plan for your life into a totally different direction. I was always into history and I loved reading mysteries since I was able to read but I wasn’t interested in the paranormal until the paranormal started to invade my life. If you don’t understand what I mean, read The Doll, the latest story I am staring in, it will explain it all for you.
RJD: Well thank you so much for joining us.
LD: Thank you for inviting me.
RJD: If you are interested in the young adult paranormal novels, the read The Doll, starring Lillian Darkwood, written by Rosie Burthom.
